What, exactly is this “existence” we appear to have? Let’s look at a few dictionary definitions:
exist - to have actual being; be
be - to exist or live
Ok, not much help there with the circular reference. Let’s go on.
1. the fact of existing; existence
2. conscious, mortal existence; life
Hmmm… “conscious”. That introduces an aspect of awareness of being. Now we’re getting somewhere.
“the ability to, directly or indirectly, interact with reality or, in more specific cases, the universe.”
Ok – what is reality, then? Again quoting from Wikipedia:
Doesn’t this then imply having some conscious presence that can interact with “reality” and have an imagination? I wonder, would “reality” exist if there were no consciousness to perceive it? And, couldn’t “reality” include more than only physical existence?
Conventional thought assumes a material existence independent of conscious perception of it. What if that were not the case? What if, instead of our “minds” being in our “bodies”, our bodies, and all of physical space and time is a construct of our minds? And what if, even though each body seems to be separate, we, and all of nature, the cosmos, and everything, are all part of one giant conscious entity?
How would that affect the way we treat each other and the rest of this cosmos we have our being in?
